What Causes Hair Loss and Balding?

If you are noticing balding or thinning hair, there may be a few underlying causes. In men, male-pattern baldness is the most common factor for hair loss. In women, hair loss is sometimes caused by illnesses like thyroid disease and polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS).

Other conditions that may contribute to hair loss include:

  • Stress
  • Telogen effluvium (TE)
  • Traction alopecia
  • Lichen planus
  • Lichen planopilaris
  • Dermatitis
  • Alopecia areata
  • Alopecia totalis
  • Melanoma
  • Auto-immune conditions

What Hair Restoration Solutions Are Available?

At The Hair Transplant Center – New Jersey, you’ll receive a comprehensive consultations with Dr. Golio to help you understand the cause of your hair loss and find the best solution to fit your aesthetic goals.

Medications That Promote Hair Growth

Depending on the severity of your loss, two medications are most commonly prescribed to treat male-pattern baldness:

Minoxidil (Rogaine)

  • Stimulates new hair growth by expanding blood vessels in the scalp
  • Applied directly to the scalp (or in tablet form with a prescription)
  • Hair loss can return if you stop using Minoxidil

Finasteride (Propecia or Proscar)

  • Most effective for mild to moderate loss
  • Commonly prescribed as a pill to slow hair thinning or balding
  • Hair loss can return if you stop using Finasteride

Our hair restoration doctors can also provide topical compounds, products, supplements, vitamins, laser caps, shampoos, and conditioners.

Hair Transplant Procedures

For more lasting results, we also offer a number of transplantation procedures in Wyckoff.

Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT)

During a FUT hair transplant, a strip of hair is surgically removed from the back of the head and is dissected by our surgeon into individual grafts, which are then placed in thinning or balding areas. FUT procedures take between 4 and 8 hours and clients are placed under local anesthesia for the duration.

Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE)

While a FUT takes a full strip of hair from your scalp, FUE procedures extract individual follicles to transplant them into areas experiencing loss. This outpatient procedure is popular because of its seamlessness and lowered risk of mismatched growth patterns.

Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy (PRP)

PRP therapy uses a microneedling tool to inject your blood’s platelets into your scalp, which stimulates thick hair growth, reduces shedding, and decreases visible patchiness.

Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)

During a scalp micropigmentation (SMP), a skilled hair restoration specialist implants pigment underneath your scalp using a microneedling machine. In just 20 minutes to an hour, this procedure will mimic the appearance of naturally grown hair and leave you feeling confident.

Facial Hair Transplants

If you’ve noticed hair loss or patchiness in your beard, mustache, or eyebrows, we offer facial hair transplants to transplant healthy follicles to your face.

PDO Threads

When combined with transplantation, polydioxanone (PDO) threads are sutures that can improve blood flow and oxygenation of the scalp. They also trigger the body’s natural platelet response and contribute to collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid production, resulting in potential hair growth over six months.

Stem Cell Grafting

Using a procedure called Stromal Vascular Fraction (SVF), stem cell grafting extracts adult skin cells from an area on the back of the scalp and injects them into problem areas to repair and reactivate unhealthy follicles.

Female Hair Restoration

If you are a woman experiencing hair loss from thyroid disease, PCOS, or other underlying conditions, you’re not alone. Dr. Golio, our experienced hair transplant surgeon, offers female hair restoration to help you get your confidence back and feel like yourself again.

The Hair Transplant Center – New Jersey offers patented processes to transplant three times the amount of hair follicles compared to other transplant methods. Our board-certified surgeons will provide you with consistent and outstanding results.

01
What is the best age for a hair transplant?

Transplantations are typically recommended for clients 30 years of age or older. If you are under 30, we typically suggest trying medications like Minoxidil or Finasteride to stabilize hair loss. Younger patients may continue to lose hair as they age, which can reverse surgery results.

02
How long do hair grafts last?

Hair grafts are made to last your entire lifetime. While a graft can take between six months and a year to begin looking natural, it is a permanent hair restoration procedure.

03
How many grafts for a full head?

The number of follicles grafted on your scalp depends on the severity of your hair loss. For a full head of hair, between 1,000 and 4,00 grafts are needed, or 2,000 to 8,000 follicles of hair. Your hair restoration surgeon can help you determine the number of grafts you will need for your desired results.

04
Am I too bald for a hair transplant?

Hair transplants are dependent on the number of hair follicles a patient has on the “donor area” on the back of the head. If you do not have any hair in this area, it may not be possible to pull donor follicles to implant them into balding areas. There can be other solutions, like extracting donor hair from your body, but we will help you make the decision that fits your needs.

05
How much does it cost to fix baldness?

The cost of transplantation varies widely, depending on the methods you are looking for and how much hair you are hoping to restore. The cost of an FUE or FUT can range from $2,000 to up to $15,000, and these procedures are typically not covered by most insurances as they are considered cosmetic. The cost of your treatment will be discussed during your consultation.
